Ohio State football began in 1890 when George Cole helped organize the university’s first team, which opened Buckeye history with a win over Ohio Wesleyan that spring. Later that year, Alexander S. Lilley stepped in as the program’s first head coach, launching a legacy that the AP would someday recognize among the greatest in college football.
