June Gutman, a self-taught artist from Montreal, Canada, entered the psychiatric world early in life due to her acute sensitivity. Spending her formative years as a patient, she now confronts the challenge of withdrawing from medication taken since childhood, grappling with symptoms like “The Terror” and navigating surreal, borderline-psychedelic, and mystical moments of “Unreality.” Her art vividly captures and explores these experiences, serving as a powerful tool to educate about institutional harm and safe tapering methods. June’s work also advocates for psychiatric survivors, shedding light on their struggles and challenging institutions that claim to heal but often perpetuate harm.
